Rally Clays NZ #1 | Results & Wrap-Up
The first Rally Clays competition in New Zealand is officially in the books.
Rally Clays made its New Zealand debut across the opening Falcon Sporting Clays Weekend at Wairarapa Clay Target Club, with shooters able to challenge one another throughout the three days and results feeding into separate AA/A, B Grade and C/Novice competition pools.
It drew interest almost immediately. Shooters gathered around the field between their Sporting rounds, matches pulled in plenty of spectators, and even many who never stepped onto the platform were soon following the scores and rallies.
The range of matches was enormous. Some were over quickly, while at the sharp end AA/A matches reached 190 and 202 valid targets before a result was decided. Developing shooters could finish a shorter match, regroup and simply challenge someone again.
Falcon Ammunition Prizes
Falcon Ammunition is backing all three Rally Clays competition pools.
For Rally Clays #1:
Pool Winner – 7 packets of Falcon ammunition
Runner-Up – 4 packets of Falcon ammunition
Ammunition prizes may only be collected on presentation of a current New Zealand firearms licence.

How the August Competition Worked
For August, Rally Clays was run as an open challenge competition, with shooters able to take on multiple opponents throughout the three days.
Each shooter’s best two winning Performance Scores against two different opponents counted toward their final pool total. Only the winner of a match received a Performance Score, calculated from the average point length and the margin of victory.
The final pool standings therefore reflect each shooter’s two best qualifying wins, rather than operating as a head-to-head ladder.

A total of 23 leaderboard-eligible matches were recorded across the weekend, alongside a number of additional friendly matches and challenges which were shot simply for fun.

ALL Match Results
AA/A Grade Pool
Winner – James Mackie (116.6 performance points)
R/U – Geoff Wells (82.3 performance points)
The AA/A pool produced some of the longest rallies of the weekend, with several matches developing into genuine tests of concentration and consistency.
James Mackie finished at the top of the pool with two counting Performance Scores combining for 116.6, while Geoff Wells took runner-up with an excellent 82.3.
B Grade Pool
Winner – Mark Dalton (13.9 performance points)
R/U – Keith Breuer (10.5 performance points)
Mark Dalton took the first B Grade Rally Clays title with counting scores of 8.2 and 5.7, finishing on 13.9.
Keith Breuer secured runner-up with 10.5.
C/Novice Grade Pool
Winner – Liam Macdonald (8.2 performance points)
R/U – Josh Moore (6.5 performance points)
Liam Macdonald produced two counting wins worth 4.3 and 3.9 to finish on 8.2.
Josh Moore was close behind on 6.5, from winning Performance Scores of 4.3 and 2.2.
More Than Just the Scores
One of the clearest successes from the weekend was how well Rally Clays worked as a spectator event. People gathered around the platform between Sporting rounds, followed the scoreboard and stayed to watch matches they had no involvement in.
The difference is having an opponent alongside you. A shooter can change the rhythm, shoot quickly, make the other competitor reload under pressure, or simply keep handing the next target back until somebody finally gives them an opening.
That direct contest created plenty of friendly banter around the platform and was probably the strongest sign from the first weekend of the potential Rally Clays has here.

August was the first New Zealand outing. September starts again with a clean scoreboard.
