Here's another opportunity to come and get involved with shooting clays at Wairarapa CTC this coming weekend in May.
We've got a field set aside with a variety of simulated field (sporting clay) targets for you to try. We'll start off with all of the basics and safety requirements, and move into learning a few techniques to break a variety of targets, then enjoy a bit of practice.
Saturday, May 24th – Informal Sporting Practice
Informal free sporting practice for experienced Club members during Saturday on the Yellow field while the Skeet competition is happening on White and Blue fields. Available between 11am - 2pm. Call James to enquire 0272779221.
Sunday, May 25th – Introduction & Coaching on Sporting Clays
We’ll be diving into the fundamentals of sporting clays and this is for everyone, from first time visitors to Club members wanting to up skill. We’ll have one field open with a variety of targets for our intro and coaching purposes. Note, no free practice today, the sporting fields are just for coaching sessions.
We'll break it into the following time slots, so you can participate in whatever areas you need. Both sessions shall be run jointly by Craig Matthews and James Mackie.
11am - Introduction and safety
We'll begin with some time spent on those shooters who are attending the Club for the first time, making sure equipment suits and everyone is safe.
We'll cover gun fit and stance, and getting the gun impacting where you are looking
This session will move into breaking a few basic targets.
We'll be restricting this session to 8 people. Registration online required
You can leave it at this for the day, or move onto the after lunch session as well.
1pm - Techniques to break targets
After lunch we'll talk about techniques to break a variety of targets, before getting on the range as a group and putting it into practice.
We can work with varying skill levels in this session, whether you are following on from the 11am introduction, or are a Club member wanting to learn a few new techniques.
This session will be restricted to 10 people. Registration online required

Don’t Have Your Own Equipment? No Problem!
If you don’t have a firearm or other gear, just let us know when you register. We’ll arrange equipment for you. Don’t have a firearms license? No worries! We’ll provide safety guidance and support throughout the coaching sessions to ensure everyone is comfortable.
✔️ Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are essential — no sandals or open footwear.
✔️ Clothing: Dress for the outdoors, with appropriate layers for the weather.
✔️ Equipment: If you do not have your own shotgun or firearms license, we can provide a suitable firearm. Details in the registration form.
✔️ Protective Gear: Eye and ear protection is mandatory. We can provide it if needed — but please bring your own if you have them.
