Sporting Weekends Return – March Season Opener
21–22 March | Wairarapa Clay Target Club
The 2026 clay target season gets underway on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd March, with the first of our flexible sporting weekends at the Wairarapa Clay Target Club.
Using the same popular format developed during the 2025 Falcon Sporting Series, the course will feature English Sporting (50 targets)Â and Super Sporting (70 targets)Â across multiple sporting fields, offering a great mix of accessible and challenging presentations.
The course will be open 9:00am Saturday through to 3:00pm Sunday, with shooters free to arrive and shoot anytime across the weekend.
Whether you're a regular clay shooter, a gamebird hunter preparing for the coming season, or someone keen to get back into the swing of things after summer, these weekends offer a relaxed and enjoyable opportunity to shoot a quality sporting course.
The Format
English Sporting – 50 targets
Classic sporting pairs designed to be enjoyable, repeatable, and rewarding to shoot.
Super Sporting – 70 targets
A slightly more technical challenge featuring a wider variety of target presentations.
Shoot either discipline, or both.
Shoot once, or re-enter and try to better your score.
Or simply spend time on the course practicing and working on specific targets.
Gamebird Hunters – Sharpen Up Before the Season
Sporting clays are one of the best ways to improve your shooting before the gamebird season.
Instead of a single quick round and heading home, a sporting course allows you to:
work on crossing birds
practise quartering targets
refine your hold points and timing
repeat targets to build confidence
Small adjustments can produce big improvements.
For many shooters, a couple of sporting rounds before the season can make a noticeable difference when the real birds start flying.
Official Rounds & Prizes
Shooters posting an official scorecard will compete in graded results across:
AA, A, B, C and Novice grades
Graded cash prize money will be paid to 1st and 2nd place in each grade for both disciplines.
Thanks to Falcon Ammunition, additional prizes of Falcon cartridges will also be awarded.
In addition, everyone who posts at least one official score will go into the draw for several great random prize draws, with a handful of excellent prizes up for grabs across the weekend.
Coaching & Guidance
Club members will be around throughout the weekend and are always happy to offer tips or guidance if you'd like help with a particular target.
Whether you're refining technique, working through a tricky presentation, or just looking to improve your consistency, there will be plenty of opportunity to learn and shoot in a relaxed environment.
New shooters are also welcome, and supervised introductions can be arranged if required.
Entry & Fees
Ground Fee:Â $10 per day (payable by all shooters, including those just practicing)
Practice Targets
Members – 50c per target
Visitors – 70c per target

Looking Ahead
From March through July, the club will be running a series of relaxed sporting weekends focused on good targets, flexible shooting, and helping members to progress.
Beginning in August, the Sporting Series will return with its full series format and major prizes.
For now, the focus is simple: good sporting targets, good company, and a great way to kick off the season.
