April Sporting Weekend – A Perfect Pre-Season Shoot
25–26 April | Wairarapa Clay Target Club
As gamebird season approaches, there’s no better time to get out and sharpen up.
On Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April, Wairarapa Clay Target Club returns with the next of our highly successful flexible sporting weekends — two full days of clay target shooting designed for regular shooters, gamebird hunters, families, and anyone keen to improve their shotgun skills in a welcoming, well-run environment.
These weekends are quickly becoming something unique in New Zealand shooting:
A relaxed, flexible format where you can arrive when it suits, shoot at your own pace, receive guidance if you want it, and enjoy one of the most thoughtfully set sporting courses around.
A Better Way To Prepare For Gamebird Season
For gamebird hunters, this is far more valuable than simply turning up to a one-day “duckshooter shoot,” firing through a hundred targets, and heading home not much wiser than when you arrived.
Here, you can:
Work repeatedly on specific target types
Practise crossing, quartering and rising birds
Receive practical tips from experienced sporting shooters
Make adjustments and immediately try again
A couple of hours spent deliberately working on target presentations now can make a huge difference when opening morning arrives.
The Format
Across the weekend, the sporting course will feature:
English Sporting – 50 Targets
Classic sporting pairs with accessible, repeatable target presentations.
Super Sporting – 70 Targets
A wider variety of target angles and technical challenge.
Shoot either discipline, or both.
Re-enter as many times as you like.
Or simply spend time on the course practising and refining your shooting.
Flexible Shooting Across Two Days
Course Open:
Saturday: 9:00am – 5:00pm
Sunday: 10:00am – 4:00pm
Come for a quick round, stay for the day, or make a full weekend of it.
Intro Sessions, Coaching & Guidance
One of the key strengths of these weekends is the opportunity to receive guidance and coaching in a relaxed, practical setting.
Whether you're:
New to clay shooting
A gamebird hunter wanting pre-season refinement
Looking to improve on a specific target type
…club coaches and experienced shooters are available to help.
Important Timing Note:
Because Saturday between 11:00am and 2:00pm is our busiest shooting period, introductory sessions and coaching are not available during that peak window.
If you'd like:
Introductory sessions
Guided tuition
One-on-one help
Please plan for:
✅ 9:00am Saturday
✅ After 2:00pm Saturday
✅ 10:00am Sunday onwards
If coaching capacity fills, this will be updated on the online registration form.
Families Welcome
Clay target shooting remains one of the great intergenerational outdoor sports.
These weekends are ideal for:
Grandparents, parents and teenagers shooting together
Families introducing younger shooters to the sport
Newcomers to see what the sport is about in a safe and welcoming setting

The Wairarapa club prides itself on creating a safe, welcoming environment where experienced shooters, newcomers, and families all feel comfortable.

Why These Weekends Matter
These weekends are unique in offering this kind of flexible, two-day sporting clays format.
These weekends are designed around how people live now:
Flexible timing, supportive coaching, family-friendly atmosphere, and the chance to truly improve rather than simply turn up and blast through targets.
If you’re preparing for gamebird season, this is where meaningful practice begins.
Next Up
After April, these sporting weekends continue through:
May 23–24
June 20–21
This April sporting weekend is part of a broader run of autumn shoots at Wairarapa, with further sporting weekends also planned for May and June.
For anyone wanting to sharpen up before or during the gamebird season, it’s a valuable and enjoyable way to get some quality shooting in.
